Continuing the South American adventure...

Still in Buenos Aires, a city that amazed us in every way. This time I am featuring the Teatro Cόlon, which is ranked as the third best opera house and one of the five best accoustic spaces in the world.

The theatre originally opened in 1857, however it was rebuilt in 1908 and subjected to major refurbishment between 2006 and 2010. It is situated alongside 9 De Julio Avenue which is the widest avenue in the world and dominates the centre of Buenos Aires.

The theatre does have a chequered history, considering the tragic circumstances that surrounded the rebuild. The original architect died before the building was finished and his assistant was also murdered. Things got worse as the man funding the project also died before completion which further delayed the project. Another architect, this time from Belgium, was appointed to oversee the construction before the re-opening in 1908.

The interior design is breathtaking to say the least and could be mistaken for a royal palace. There are even secret viewing areas at the side which afford the greatest privacy for widows who could not be seen in public. There are stories about eligible men booking seats at the sides in the hope that they might be spotted by one of these rich widows...

The next instalment will see us at Iguazu Falls, so please continue to watch this space.
